Mad Over Donuts – M.O.D dominates a prominent spot in Vashi Inorbit mall’s food court and is a delight for senses and a much sought after treat for kids after their meals! MOD launched its first outlet in India in 2008 and had the first mover advantage in our heterogeneous market. With the perfected technology, well tried and tested pure veg product recipe and the model designed for scale and expansion it is good to see that it has tested many waters and is growing steadily (as against its famous counter parts!). Thankfully this was not done by some fledgling startup on a shoe string budget as they wouldn’t have survived this mean segment! Unlike the western/ developed countries where donut is a staple to-go breakfast product, Donuts in India are very averagely consumed product as a dessert and has been sitting on the shelves of bakery shops with eclairs and cakes. Indian psychology and palette has added a twist to the tale and has taken it to the new avatar of just-rightly-warmed-before-service-donuts so that the toppings are melted to room temperature and donut itself is indulgent. What we ordered: Divine Crush Donut: MODs signature classic base donut glazed with chocolate and decorated with colourful gems! My 4 year old’s criteria is very simple – its donuts + gems + chocolate – no need to look for anything else! Gotta be the best! It definitely lived upto its expectation as just a moment of pinching it with wooden spoon a neat spoonful of heavenly donut was ready to go into our mouth. Perfect bite – not too chewy or doughy, rightly spongy and sinfully chocolaty was assault on senses. Gems on the top provided the right crunch. Indulgent dish to go for!! Hazelnut Bliss with Nutella –Milk chocolate Nutella and Hazelnut custard We thought that MOD has expanded its signature product base and has been successful in replicating the choux pastry in veg format for Indians. Before ordering this item we checked with counter operator if this was an actual éclair or just a donut! He said it’s different and not a donut. With this expectation we decided to order an éclair – Hazelnut Bliss with Nutella. Very pretty to look, very sinful and successful combination of Nutella and chocolate but very disappointing éclair!! Tsk Tsk ..if we wanted a hot dog shaped donut, we would have asked for it!! We can only request or hope that MOD applies its over 100 years of baking experience and do justice to this product or completely discontinue it. Many other players have suffered their fall because of confusion in their formats- wrongly sized outlets, poor products, wrongly priced products, identity crisis of being a café or dessert shop or QSR, however MOD so far has made no such mistake. It has stood solemnly doing a job of providing good yummy donuts in both sweet and savory variety, listening and engaging to customers and meeting their demands. But advent of poorly made waffles and run down on eclairs look like first sign of gnawing insecurity or need to compete and prove. My take – stay put MOD! We love your Donuts- Don’t do anything stupid!
