Again a deserving 4.5 but alas! No such option!! A glass of on-the-house buttermilk - perfect beginning. The opening duo - an excellent Gondhoraj Chicken Kebab, juicy and succulent, & an equally delicious Tandoori Prawn were the starters we ordered. Mutton stew and appam followed - both outstanding to say the least; the stew was light yet full of flavor, boneless unbelievably tender pieces of mutton cooked the “Karnataka” way and fluffy appams; can you ask for more?! Double Ka Mitha, the dessert, was the perfect icing on the cake - absolutely stunning, if I may say so!! This is undoubtedly one of the best standalone restaurants in Kolkata based on our experience yesterday.

We decided to treat the family to an authentic south Indian meal, on our recent visit to Kolkata and thus dropped in at The Tamarind. The interiors are richly done up with a distinct South Indian style and the seating is cosy. We were given a complimentary buttermilk which was very refreshing!. We ordered; Appam- found it to be very thick. Malabar chicken- which was very average in taste. Chemen curry (prawns) -This dish was a huge disappointment, mainly because the prawns were not fresh but the frozen quality that can be brought in supermarkets. Thus the texture was rubbery and hard and added no flavour to the curry. Malabar paratha -was good Service was very slow. Prices are on the higher side

I haven't been to their restaurant, but have tasted their items in food festivals. Their specialities are appam and mutton or chicken stew. Appam melt in the mouth and are best relished with the light curry leaf flavoured stew. Chicken biriyani and chicken 65 are also good. The biriyani is in the Hyderabadi style. Usually served with raita. Want to visit their restaurant soon.
